Transformation into a vital district
The $2 billion South Waterfront Central District in Portland, Oregon was at the time, the largest urban infill project in the United States and the largest economic development project in Portland’s history. Co-developed by Gerding Edlen Development and Williams & Dame Development, the project is a prime example of the transformation of vacant land and property in urban areas of the western U.S. into sustainable, vibrant communities.
Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Health & Healing, located within the South Waterfront Central District, was upon completion, the largest LEED Platinum project in the nation and the first medical facility in the world to be built to this standard. This 16-story, 412,000 sq ft building is devoted to physician practices, surgery and imaging, health and wellness, and education and bio-medical research. OHSU is the state's largest research institution and Portland's largest employer, and the Center acts as a community catalyst for the entire South Waterfront district.
